Philadelphia County Prison
(Moyamensing Prison)
The Philadelphia Public Ledger was published for nearly a century from 1836 to 1942. During the mid-19th century the newspaper would often include statistics for Philadelphia’s County Prison located in the Moyamensing section of the City (the prison was also called Moyamensing Prison). The statistics would include daily, monthly, or yearly prison commitments by gender and race, as well as commitments by type of crime. The County/Moyamensing Prison generally held those with shorter sentences or those awaiting trial. Eastern State Penitentiary, which was Philadelphia’s other prison at the time, was a State prison for those with long sentences. Here are a few charts gleaned from the tables published in the Ledger.
The following chart shows the number of commitments by years at the prison. Notice the peak in 1860 followed by a drop during the Civil War years.

This chart shows the monthly distribution for a single year (1856) by race and gender. Notice the rise in County Prison commitments to the peak in August.

Below are the number of commitments in January 1861 by the type of crime committed.
